INDA’s Design-Build Knowledge Hut is specifically designed to demystify the designing & building processes using hands-on, experiential learning to teach students the sense of good architectural design and the skill & understand of enduring craftsmanship as a single, integrated process. Students designed and built a small library for Ban Klong Pa-Mai School in Rayong with funding provided by Baker & McKenzie Ltd. They gain experience from working with real clients and orchestrate with builders, suppliers, public agencies, & hands-on construction. This creative process offers students unique insight info into oftentimes desperate worlds of the architect and the builder. Architects are routinely trained without any building experience that might inform their design, and builders are trained to execute without a sense of the overarching purpose or design of the project.

The Knowledge Hut’s design attracted many local interests, especially from the teachers of Ban Klong Pa-Mai who want to build their own homes based on the Knowledge Hut’s technology & design. Architecture has always been a service profession, but it has traditionally served only those who can afford it. By working for clients who do have access to architecture, INDA students are exposed to community outreach and the notion of all society as our clients. This redefinition of value meets our initial objective of community service & commitment. Lead by instructors Komthat Syamananda and Ekaluck Staporntonapat, the knowledge hut was an intensive project, constantly engaging, challenging INDA students to solve complex domestic design problems through the integration of the

Praya Prasit Community Learning Center

The project engages with the Phraya Prasit Community of 700 people to redevelop their existing community building into a multifunctional community learning center. Students developed a well-crafted project that not only serves the community but also encourages students to engage with similar activities in their future professional life. Students were engaged with an existing building in Dusit District and learned how to work with the local community, how to survey an existing structure and use modern techniques to prepare a body of research work.

Ban Muang Khun Pottery Community Pavilion

Ban Muang Khun is a small pottery village ten kilometers south of the center of Chiang Mai. There are thirty craftsmen based here, and they produce unique earthenware using their local clay. The village mayor, Mr. Wachira Seejun (Khun Tang) agreed to work with a group of INDA students to build a “Ceramic Pavilion“ for their community to display and promote their products. The project uses ceramic tiles to decorate and cover the structure. Local craftsmen collaborated on the design and production of the tiles. Students visited the site to understand ceramic production and the local context, and to consider sustainable ways of maintaining the pavilion in the long-term. The design of the pavilion was determined through an internal competition and the development of ceramic tile components and a structural base. Students visited ceramic studios in Bangkok to make prototypes which were later mass-produced at a ceramic factory.
