At King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital (KCMH), a small city of personnels works tirelessly to make sick people get better. In addition to doctors, pharmacists, lab scientists, and nurses that are directly involved in the medicinal work, there is a community of hospital staff that enables and enhances the healing process. Often behind the scene, this group of people ranges from accountants, clerks, cooks, janitors, security guards, mechanics, gardeners, ground keepers, etc. Without these essential workers, the operation of this public hospital would grind to a halt.
This project aims to help out the community of hospital staff at KCMH, transforming a pair of service spaces.
The first is the replacement of the existing greenhouse. The existing shed was overfilled with plants and had potential to be upgraded to a proper plant nursery for efficiency and structural integrity.
The second space is the feature courtyard behind the new buildings, fenced off and used for maintenance and storage.
This front of house/back of house project offered a great opportunity for INDA students to engage in a public servicing role and execute their design ideas in creative, practical forms.

Alfresco Learning
The project is located within the property leased by the Bangkok Vocational School in Khlong Toei district, Bangkok. It is open to local pupils of the Klong Toei community. The new open structure adjacent to the existing building provides additional outdoor learning space. The design of the structure reacts to Bangkok weather conditions by using lightweight material, namely, textile fabric, to provide solar shading. This multifunctional area is now used by primary school students for both educational occupations during the day and leisure communal activities in the evening.

Playground
The playground project is a collaboration between INDA, AmCham, and Su Rau Keo, a Mosque-run community school in the Bang Bua Thong area of Nonthaburi province. Over an 8 week period in summer 2007, lead by instructors Eden Price Reif and Sirintra Vanno,14 students spent about 64 hours engaging local playgrounds to examine positive and negative playground equipment precedents, studying texts and international guidelines, visiting the Su Rau Keo site to interview the stakeholders and user groups to discern their needs and desires, and documenting the site’s local context to better understand the community. After an intense design period, a solution was reached and students hired the contractor in implementing the design while living on-site for 5 days during the month of July, 2008.
