Drive-in cinemas emerged in the United States in the 1930s, but they have found renewed relevance in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Only one year ago, terms like “self-isolation,” “self-quarantine,” and “social-distancing” were simply not a part of the general lexicon. We now need to adhere to social-distancing measures, but we are inherently social beings. One of the few architectural typologies that can accommodate this unusual mix of self-isolation and entertainment is the drive-in cinema. In response, students designed a cinema installation that can be quickly assembled and disassembled to facilitate transportation to multiple communities around Bangkok. For the project to be economically sustainable over a longer period of time, a number of sites, programs, and festivals have been earmarked as potential opportunities for cinema events including the INDA Assembly, the Suanluang Square Field & Flea Market, and Bangkok Design Week 2021.

King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital

At King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital (KCMH), a small city of personnels works tirelessly to make sick people get better. In addition to doctors, pharmacists, lab scientists, and nurses that are directly involved in the medicinal work, there is a community of hospital staff that enables and enhances the healing process. Often behind the scene, this group of people ranges from accountants, clerks, cooks, janitors, security guards, mechanics, gardeners, ground keepers, etc. Without these essential workers, the operation of this public hospital would grind to a halt. This project aims to help out the community of hospital staff at KCMH, transforming a pair of service spaces. The first is the replacement of the existing greenhouse. The existing shed was overfilled with plants and had potential to be upgraded to a proper plant nursery for efficiency and structural integrity. The second space is the feature courtyard behind the new buildings, fenced off and used for maintenance and storage. This front of house/back of house project offered a great opportunity for INDA students to engage in a public servicing role and execute their design ideas in creative, practical forms.

B.O.B

B.O.B. takes the concepts of biomimicry and biomimetics to create a captivating experience involving themes of generations, connections, and human-nature symbiosis. With forms inspired by the complex nature of the environment such as the lotus flower, the installation can also be seen as an artwork come to life, mimicking its movements through motions of plant likeness combined with robotic joints and mechanisms, as if it was its own living consciousness. It can also be interpreted as different parts and perspectives of nature; Is it a tree or a magnified view of a plant’s leaf, roots, or branches? B.O.B purpose is also to inspire generational connectivity through its users, activating different levels of movement and illuminated displays based on factors of age and user quantity. This encourages users to interact and explore the various patterns that can occur, as well as an element of discovery which inspires interaction between the different user generations.
