‘Bangkok Domestic Tastes: a Tailored Speculation’ is a ‘tapestry’ that reflects on the promotion and marketing strategies of the real estate market in Bangkok through playful narrative techniques. 

Developed in a workshop with second-year students, it represents nine existing neighborhoods, aiming to reflect on the ‘lifestyle’ that each condo constructs, promotes, and sells. It highlights a disconnect between the standardized physical products, the built apartments, and their immaterial counterparts–the variegated lifestyles described in explicit and catchy advertising.


The graphic realization is inspired by the representation techniques, color palettes, and compositions of traditional Thai mural paintings, including hybridizations of typical urban animals, recalling the iconography of folkloric mythological creatures.

The artwork has been modeled in 3D, transposed into an elevation oblique drawing, colored and blended in vector graphic software, and later printed on cotton canvas with the addition of CNC embroidered elements. This allows for the inclusion of materials and colors that are important in a Thai context, like gold and other textiles.


‘Bangkok Domestic Tastes: a Tailored Speculation’ presents a critical yet playful journey through the city, while reflecting on how some of its important components evolve and shape its life patterns.
The tapestry has been exhibited in the exhibition 999 Questions on Contemporary Living, at La Triennale di Milano, it has won the drawing competition ‘The Island: Between Utopia and Metaphor for Reality’ by Library and Desplans gallery, and it has been published in MONU 29 ‘Narrative Urbanism.’

IoT Garden

Advanced Info Service (AIS) established the AIS Design Centre (AIS D.C.) as a new venture to welcome startups and anyone interested in design and creative endeavors. At the entry of AIS D.C., an open area is available for the public to view services and information collected via Internet of Things (IoT) devices connected through the AIS network such as weather, humidity, traffic, etc. AIS sought to explore an experimental installation that could visualize or make tangible some of this digital data while providing some on-site interaction that would encourage physical engagement. This interactive experience would be a pilot project that could possibly be duplicated or expanded upon to include additional kinds of information or other locations in the near future. Students worked closely with the AIS IoT team and the project assistants to design and construct an interactive installation as a standalone object at the entry hall area of AIS D.C. The resulting design visualized environmental data including PM2.5, humidity, and noise from twelve districts within Bangkok through a network of digital flowers in a garden.

Playground

The playground project is a collaboration between INDA, AmCham, and Su Rau Keo, a Mosque-run community school in the Bang Bua Thong area of Nonthaburi province. Over an 8 week period in summer 2007, lead by instructors Eden Price Reif and Sirintra Vanno,14 students spent about 64 hours engaging local playgrounds to examine positive and negative playground equipment precedents, studying texts and international guidelines, visiting the Su Rau Keo site to interview the stakeholders and user groups to discern their needs and desires, and documenting the site’s local context to better understand the community. After an intense design period, a solution was reached and students hired the contractor in implementing the design while living on-site for 5 days during the month of July, 2008.
