In response to the international brief initiated by Europe Readr, ‘A Library Under the Treetops’ is a project that aims to create a space/installation that redefines the public and private interface. The design intention is to accommodate a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable reading space in an open urban area for people in the residential neighborhood of Ladprao, Bangkok.

To blur the public-private boundary, the design process of this reading space/ installation is collaborative in nature, bringing architects, local craftsmen and workers, educators, students, and the local community together in order to imagine and produce a space that creates a social impact in the local environment. Our concept is to generate a sustainable design by sourcing recyclable materials to ensure the long-lasting life span of the project beyond its completion. Ultimately, the goal in producing such a space is to advance a sustained awareness of the quality of life beyond consumption, to stimulate the need for reading and knowledge, and to satisfy the human desire to be with others despite the constraints of the metropolis.

PHI PHI ISLAND

The Baan Laem Tong School serves the local communities on the island of Phi Phi Don. The majority of children attending this small primary school are from the "Sea Gypsy Village" on Laem Tong beach. They are currently overwhelmed by the rapid development of the tourist industry around Leam Tong (Tong Cape). The community, consisting of approximately 50 families, primarily sustains themselves by providing long tail boat services for tourists. Due to their limited primary education, it is extremely challenging for them to work at the nearby five-star hotels. The Baan Leam Tong School only offers education up to the primary school level. For higher education opportunities, students have to travel to the mainland. The Baan Leam Tong International Community Resource Center project aims to provide a place for those who are unable to pursue higher education to receive vocational training from volunteers within the international community. These volunteers would also have accommodation at the facility. A group of INDA students, along with Assistant Professor Rachaporn Choochuey and students from Chulalongkorn University's Thai architecture program, visited the site to lend a hand with the construction.

INDA Makes INDA

In an exploratory and ambitious school like INDA, the spaces where learning and experimentation happen are vital to its livelihood and its success as a creative hub. This workshop aims to design and realize support components and devices (including furniture pieces, identity elements, storage units, etc.) for the new studio spaces at the Chulapat 14 building. Students research the social and creative dynamics of spaces that are not used specifically for classroom instruction in design schools around the world. They examine spaces that foster dialog and discussion, and they explore the value of seemingly unnecessary spaces and elements. How can we enable exchange and support informal interactions through the design of space and the objects within it?
