Baan Due Toong Sawan School has a 100 year old history and is located in Nong Khai Province, on the border between Thailand and Laos. It offers a K-6 program with a total of 50-60 students enrolled. The school is located in the ‘red zone’ which is an area of high poverty and crime. Facing extreme financial difficulty, the school lacks basic facilities and is constantly targeted by local teenagers who often trespass or damage the property.

The project is responding to the most urgent issue–extension and refurbishment of the kindergarten building. The current building was self-built by the local community and had urgent issues including water leakage, electrical leakage, shortage of space, both for playing and learning, and insufficient toilet facilities.

Knowledge Hut

INDA’s Design-Build Knowledge Hut is specifically designed to demystify the designing & building processes using hands-on, experiential learning to teach students the sense of good architectural design and the skill & understand of enduring craftsmanship as a single, integrated process. Students designed and built a small library for Ban Klong Pa-Mai School in Rayong with funding provided by Baker & McKenzie Ltd. They gain experience from working with real clients and orchestrate with builders, suppliers, public agencies, & hands-on construction. This creative process offers students unique insight info into oftentimes desperate worlds of the architect and the builder. Architects are routinely trained without any building experience that might inform their design, and builders are trained to execute without a sense of the overarching purpose or design of the project. The Knowledge Hut’s design attracted many local interests, especially from the teachers of Ban Klong Pa-Mai who want to build their own homes based on the Knowledge Hut’s technology & design. Architecture has always been a service profession, but it has traditionally served only those who can afford it. By working for clients who do have access to architecture, INDA students are exposed to community outreach and the notion of all society as our clients. This redefinition of value meets our initial objective of community service & commitment. Lead by instructors Komthat Syamananda and Ekaluck Staporntonapat, the knowledge hut was an intensive project, constantly engaging, challenging INDA students to solve complex domestic design problems through the integration of the

Chanhunbamphen School Cafe/Gallerie

Over the summer, a group of students undertook the task of designing the layout and furniture for a Cafe & Gallery in an empty area within Chanhunmumphen school. The proposed design involved repurposing old wood, doors, and cabinet drawers to create furniture for the interior of the space. Once the design of the prototype, including chairs, tables, and shelving units, was finalized, the students dedicated the following weeks to fabricating the pieces in a workshop. Finally, the proposed design and furniture were presented to both the Chanhunbamphen school and the community.
