In response to the international brief initiated by Europe Readr, ‘A Library Under the Treetops’ is a project that aims to create a space/installation that redefines the public and private interface. The design intention is to accommodate a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable reading space in an open urban area for people in the residential neighborhood of Ladprao, Bangkok.

To blur the public-private boundary, the design process of this reading space/ installation is collaborative in nature, bringing architects, local craftsmen and workers, educators, students, and the local community together in order to imagine and produce a space that creates a social impact in the local environment. Our concept is to generate a sustainable design by sourcing recyclable materials to ensure the long-lasting life span of the project beyond its completion. Ultimately, the goal in producing such a space is to advance a sustained awareness of the quality of life beyond consumption, to stimulate the need for reading and knowledge, and to satisfy the human desire to be with others despite the constraints of the metropolis.

Frugal

The project is to design and deliver communal living spaces to an existing low income residential buildings. The buildings provide single aspect small living units and residents have no spaces to socialise or relax away from their bedroom. Some existing communal spaces are fragmented and lack of a vision for social interaction. The project intends to fill this gap using the available open spaces. Focused on and a creative use and re-use of materials readily available, students develop the design starting from a catalogue of materials and ‘parts’ rather than an architectural form, thus learning how to develop a minimal and efficient yet creative architectural design. Particular emphasis is given to the environmental impact of the design whereby students are guided through design decisions within the general strategy.

Treescape

Bangkok’s grand trees are an essential part of the urban landscape. They provide shelter and shade; they act as gathering points for food sellers and tuk tuk drivers; they give the streets their distinctive character; they absorb airborne pollutants, and they sequester carbon. Trees provide habitats for birds, squirrels, and insects, and they have bridged human generations, embedding experiences and rooting communities. ‘Treescape’ embraces our inescapable connection with Bangkok’s trees through the construction of an elevated structure that brings together the local community in Phra Khanong. Students met with arboriculturalist Rainer Reichel to better understand the features and characteristics of the local trees, created a highly precise 3D photogrammetric scan of the trees, and presented their design proposal to the Phra Khanong District Authority for approval. A reinterpretation of a childhood tree house--an enchanting stage elevated above the site--the structure provides safe access to higher branches in the tree’s canopy and creates a unique space for play and for environmental connection.
