Drive-in cinemas emerged in the United States in the 1930s, but they have found renewed relevance in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Only one year ago, terms like “self-isolation,” “self-quarantine,” and “social-distancing” were simply not a part of the general lexicon. We now need to adhere to social-distancing measures, but we are inherently social beings. One of the few architectural typologies that can accommodate this unusual mix of self-isolation and entertainment is the drive-in cinema. In response, students designed a cinema installation that can be quickly assembled and disassembled to facilitate transportation to multiple communities around Bangkok. For the project to be economically sustainable over a longer period of time, a number of sites, programs, and festivals have been earmarked as potential opportunities for cinema events including the INDA Assembly, the Suanluang Square Field & Flea Market, and Bangkok Design Week 2021.

Pipo Project

Childhood is a time of wistfulness and innocence. Throughout this period, one learns to engage with the surroundings and associate them with certain emotions. Consequently, joyful moments and freedom of imagination are often abandoned as people mature. In spite of this, some places, things, events, or even familiar atmospheres can evoke sentiments of the past—nostalgia.  This project proposes a hybrid spatial design that reminds ourselves of these collective childhood memories through innovative experiences. In order to connect with a larger audience, Pipo, a well-known jelly cup confectionery, is introduced as a retrospective medium. Combining material interaction with digital manipulation, the design development utilizes both virtual and physical experimentation. The project uses multiple communication strategies to provoke particular emotions and senses of the ‘afterlife.’ How have our lifestyles, eating behaviors, and habits been challenged and altered? How can a small scale architectural intervention provide the experience of inclusivity in our collective memory?

Kindergarten Refurbishment

Baan Due Toong Sawan School has a 100 year old history and is located in Nong Khai Province, on the border between Thailand and Laos. It offers a K-6 program with a total of 50-60 students enrolled. The school is located in the ‘red zone’ which is an area of high poverty and crime. Facing extreme financial difficulty, the school lacks basic facilities and is constantly targeted by local teenagers who often trespass or damage the property. The project is responding to the most urgent issue–extension and refurbishment of the kindergarten building. The current building was self-built by the local community and had urgent issues including water leakage, electrical leakage, shortage of space, both for playing and learning, and insufficient toilet facilities.
